Welcome to the Huntsville community!
This was a small and quiet little town until back in the time of World War II when it was selected by the U.S. Army as the perfect place to build chemical munitions facilities. Three major facilities started their operations: Huntsville Arsenal, the Redstone Arsenal, and the Gulf Chemical Warfare Depot.
After the war was over and the munitions were no longer needed, with the help of a Senator, they transformed this place into the Army's rocket and missile development centers. The George C. Marshall Space Flight Center is NASA’s largest center, focusing on civilian rocketry and propulsion systems for spacecraft (including the engines for the Space Shuttle).
There is another cool fact about this place- it's known as "Rocket City" because it was associated with the country's space missions. The very first America's satellite, named Explorer 1, was launched into orbit from this very spot.
Things to do in Huntsville:
A visit to the U.S. Space and Rocket Center is pretty obvious once we told you that this place is also known as Rocket City. This place is so very cool because it works as a Smithsonian affiliate and it’s the official visiting center for one of NASA's flight centers. They have one of the largest collections of rockets and fun stuff straight out of space in the world. This place should be a must on your list.
Visit Huntsville Botanical Garden for a delightful experience. This place is more than just a pretty garden. Here you will find tons of events, activities, and art. If you visit them during the Christmas holidays you can enjoy the Galaxy of Lights, a true shining extravaganza that will make your heart light up!
For a little bit more of nature, you can go to Harmony Park Safari. You will drive a two-mile route and you will encounter face to face with zebras, buffalos, camels, zebus, antelopes, and even kangaroos and giraffes.
On the eastern side of Monte Sano Mountain, the recreation area and mountaintop retreat of Monte Sano State Park offers a break from city life. Enjoy hiking trails, picnic areas, and campsites.
Please join the Huntsville community and help make it a thriving resource for local information! Visitors are welcome to post messages asking questions that local experts can help answer.
