Originally called Charles Town when it was founded back in 1670, it was named in homage to King Charles II of England. The town remained very British, even though the days of the colonial period. London had complete control over this piece of land. Charleston adopted its present name and autonomy with its incorporation as a city in 1783 at the close of the Revolutionary War.
The weather here is considered to be humid and subtropical. This means that winters are mild and summers are hot and humid. Don't expect the summer to be bright and sunny because this is actually the time where most of the rainfall goes on. If you are going to plan a visit during June through September, you had better pack a raincoat and rain boots with your luggage.
A Creole language was developed in this place due to the great number of African-Americans who inhabited this land. This tongue is called Gullah. Today, Gullah is still spoken by many African-American residents.
Charleston is also known as the “Holy City" because you will find churches to be just around every corner. Also, you need to keep in mind that historically South Carolina was among the few original colonies to tolerate all Protestants.
