Have you ever inhaled helium and laughed about the funny voice tone that it gives you? Well, maybe that helium that makes you have so much fun came from this very spot. They have one of the country's most productive helium fields. Yup! There are the cities that produce charcoal, metals, meat, eggs, and veggies, and then there is Amarillo, which is a top helium producer.
Amarillo sits closer in proximity to the Oklahoma, New Mexico, and Colorado state capitals than it does to the Texas capital of Austin.
Amarillo is considered the regional economic center for the Texas Panhandle. They were once popular for helium, as we told you, and now they are very popular for their meat. The meat packing industry is a major employer in Amarillo. Petroleum extraction is also a major industry here.
Amarillo has some nice canyons that you can enjoy at a very close distance. There is, for example, the Palo Duro Canyon State Park, the second largest canyon system in the country.
You can also visit the Alibates Flint Quarries National Monument, Texas's first national monument. When you visit, you will gain a sense of how integral this site was to the survival, commerce, and culture of people living on the High Plains over many millennia. There is a lot to do in the Alibates. The place has a modern Visitor Center with interactive exhibits, bookstore, and a theater. You can also enjoy the trail areas and the camping places.
You can also have fun by visiting the American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA) is an international organization dedicated to the preservation, improvement, and record-keeping of the American Quarter Horse breed.
