Welcome to the Lubbock community!

Lubbock County was founded in 1876 and named after Thomas S. Lubbock, a signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence and subsequent Confederate officer.

The modern town of Lubbock was not established until 1890 when old-Lubbock and the smaller town of Monterey struck an unusual alliance and merged the two communities, a deal most likely initiated by rival town promoters hired by area ranchers and merchants to lobby Ft. Worth & Denver for a rail depot.

Lubbock is one of those rare cities where history permeates everything, and as a result, most locals know at least something about the city's history.

Music fans should know that Lubbock is the birthplace of Buddy Holly. Not surprising, the city has a museum to celebrate the artist’s impact on Rock and Roll. The Buddy Holly Center and West Texas Hall of Fame commemorates his music and his life with several exhibits and programs about Holly and the unique music of the region.
