It is the state capital and largest city of Indiana and is in Marion County. Indianapolis is also known as the "Racing Capital of the World" due to the proximity of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, home of the Indy 500 and Allstate 400 at the Brickyard (formerly known as the "Brickyard 400").
Outside Downtown and Broad Ripple, you'll need a car to get around the city. While the public bus system is both clean and efficient, routes are complex, and large parts of the metro area are not serviced.
Things to do in Indianapolis:
Visit the Indianapolis Museum of Art for a cultural experience like no other. This place is also known as Newfields and they claim they are the place for the arts and nature. They have a lot of very interesting exhibitions and important artists- names like Rembrandt and Turner, Cezanne and Picasso, O’Keefe and Hopper, Calder and Lichtenstein, and LeWitt and Sherman. You can find tons of styles and the experience will be completely refreshing. Another great fact: parking is completely free!
For a little bit of Indianapolis history, you can go visit the Benjamin Harrison Presidential Site. This place is a museum and memorial to the only U.S. President elected from the State of Indiana: Benjamin Harrison.
The Downtown area’s White River State Park offers a mix of urban green space, cultural attractions, and an outdoor concert location. Visitors can explore the area by foot, bicycle, pedal boat, or even Segway (rentals are available in the park). Several attractions are located within the park, including Indianapolis Zoo, Indiana State Museum, an IMAX theater, and Victory Field (baseball field used by the Indianapolis Indians AAA baseball club).
The Children’s Museum offers many different learning experiences for children, spanning the sciences, arts, and humanities. Founded in 1925, the museum’s almost 473,000 square feet of facilities is located on a 29-acre campus that features everything from dinosaurs to railroads to hands-on experience exhibits. Here’s some cool trivia- the 17-feet tall “Bumblebee” transformer that greets visitors in the museum’s Welcome Center is the actual prop used in the 2007 “Transformers” movie!
If you want to feel a little rush of adrenaline and want to put some speed on your trip, you must plan a visit to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum. This is a super cool place that honors the story of speed racing cars. You will find models from all over the years and you will be surprised by the stories behind the cars and the men that drove them. And of course, if you’re here during race days, you’ll definitely want to experience the Indiana Motor Speedway in action, especially if you’re here Memorial Day weekend for the granddaddy of its races- the Indianapolis 500.
