Davis has the highest per capita number of bikes of any city in the U.S. It's the preferred method of transportation for most students and locals due to the prevalence of bike paths and the relative flatness of the area.
Downtown Davis is also very pedestrian friendly. The UC Davis campus and the heart of the downtown area run alongside one another and it's easy to stroll through both in a couple of hours. Trust us here, don't rent a car. Probably the worst way to experience Davis is by car. The huge numbers of bikers and pedestrians make driving slow and tedious at many times throughout the day.
While in Davis we recommend this list of fun activities:
- United States Bicycling Hall of Fame. Given the popularity of bicycling in the area, it makes sense to have a museum dedicated to the sport and has a large collection of antique bikes and trophies.
- UC Davis California Raptor Center. An educational center that rehabilitates injured and orphaned birds of prey found in the surrounding counties.
- UC Davis Arboretum. The arboretum is home to plant species that range from Mediterranean to South African and even includes somewhat smaller examples of California's North Coast Redwoods.
- Davis Transmedia Art Walk. The free, self-guided Davis Transmedia Art walk is the first of its kind in the country. The Davis Transmedia Art Walk consists of 23 public murals, 16 sculptures and 15 galleries and museums in downtown Davis and on the University of California.
- Davis Farmers Market. The area is also a large farming area, and many local farmers sell their produce here on Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings.
The city also holds several festivals each year:
- Whole Earth Festival: Help on Mother’s Day weekend, WEF is organized entirely by UC Davis students and includes music, speakers, and workshops.
- Picnic Day: Held on the 3rd Saturday in April, it’s the largest student-run event in America. Starting with a parade, the event’s attendance reaches 50,000 visitors for more than 150 free events (including live bands, sheep dog trials, and exhibits by many of the University’s departments).
- Celebrate Davis: The local Chamber of Commerce helps promote the area’s businesses with live music, interactive activities, and food vendors.
