Palo Alto receives its name for a very old tree. Yes! Palo Alto means tall tree in Spanish, and in this case, refers to an aging redwood tree at the north end of the city. The 1061-year-old Coast Redwood, which stands 110 feet (34 m.) high and has a base diameter of 90 inches (229 cm.), marks a campsite for the Portola Expedition Party of 1769.
While you are here, consider that automobiles are definitely the most convenient way to get around, and parking is plentiful everywhere except the downtown area.

For communing with nature, a trip to the 1,940-acre (785-ha) Baylands Nature Preserve will help you recharge your mental batteries. It contains one of the largest sections of untouched marshland (with freshwater and saltwater habitats) in the region. About 15 miles (25 km.) of multi-use trails help visitors access the areas while helping to preserve them for future generations. Besides hiking and biking on the trails, you can enjoy bird watching, boating (small non-motorized craft only), wind surfing, and a number of guided tours and ecology programs.
