This place is also known for being a "knowledge corridor" because of the 25 universities and colleges within a 15-mile (24 km.) radius from Springfield, including several of America's most prestigious universities and liberal arts colleges. Thanks to the universities, Springfield has become a place with an important number of tech companies and as of 2009, Springfield ranks as the 24th most important high-tech center in the United States with approximately 14,000 high-tech jobs.
The Eastern States Exposition, known popularly as "The Big E" is located across Springfield's Memorial Bridge in West Springfield. This is a huge agricultural fair that attracts thousands of tourists during that time of the year (September-October).
If you are looking for a little night fun and some drinks, then you will be pleased to know that Springfield's nightlife is very good! Springfield's Club Quarter is the nightlife capital of the Pioneer Valley and the Knowledge Corridor, featuring approximately 60 dance clubs, bars, music venues, LGBT venues, and after-hours establishments. Talk about a place to move your feet to the music!
If you are into guns or into different tours and experiences, you can visit Springfield Armory, Inc. This is an American firearms manufacturer founded in 1974 by Elmer Balance of Devine. It is one of the largest firearm companies in the world.
If you are a more artsy person, you can visit the Michele and Donald D’Amour Museum of Fine Arts, this is an incredible Art Deco style building that includes a massive collection of American, Asian, and European paintings, prints, watercolors and sculpture and representative examples of drawing, furniture, metalwork, textiles, glass, and ceramics- an impressive and delightful place.
