Welcome to the Omaha community!

Much of the city of Omaha was built on the Missouri River. Furthermore, there are a few other bodies of water located in the Omaha-Council Bluffs metropolitan area: Lake Manawa, Papillion Creek, Carter Lake, Platte River, and Glenn Cunningham Lake. The lakes and rivers offer many recreation opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts. Heartland of America Park, located downtown, offers a paved walking trail, computerized fountains (with a nighttime light show), and even a boat with summer tours around the lake- all in the middle of a large urban area.

In terms of geographic areas, Omaha is commonly parted into six: Downtown, Midtown, North Omaha, South Omaha, West Omaha (including Miracle Hills, Boys Town, Regency, and Gateway areas), and East Omaha. However, an early neighborhood expansion happened among several ethnic enclaves many years ago, including Little Italy, where they hold an annual festival called "La Festa" to unite the city's Italian community; Little Bohemia, still a historical neighborhood where Czech immigrants settled in the past; Little Mexico, a former Latino neighborhood; and Greek Town, a primarily Greek urban neighborhood.

The best way to move around the city is by a personal vehicle or a rented one. However, you can also take a public bus service to hundreds of locations throughout the Metro. You can also travel across the city on your own or rented bike, since Omaha has more than 80 miles (129 km) of trails for pedestrians, cyclists, and hikers, including the American Discovery Trail, which crosses the whole United States, and also features the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail

For those interested in contemporaneous history, Omaha has many nationally, regionally, and locally recognized landmarks and historic districts. The most remarkable landmarks are located in the Fort Omaha Historic District, Gold Coast Historic District, Omaha Quartermaster Depot Historic District, Field Club Historic District, Bemis Park Historic District, and the South Omaha Main Street Historic District.

As a historic place, but also a great place for shopping and an antique experience, Omaha has The Old Market, a neighborhood in downtown Omaha. It features tons of restaurants, art galleries, and upscale shopping. As an attractive bonus for tourists, the neighborhood still has its original brick paved streets from the turn of the century; as well as horse-drawn carriages, and covered sidewalks in some areas. The Old Market’s cultural features include a diversity of street performers, artists, and other vendors.

If you are very much into animals and nature, you surely cannot miss a visit to the Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium, located at 3701 South 10th Street. Featuring the largest cat complex in North America, it’s been recognized by some travel agencies as the best zoo in the world. It has the largest night-time exhibit and indoor swamp called "Kingdoms of the Night. Moreover, it also features the Lied Jungle, one of the world's largest indoor rainforests. Last but not least, it has an area called the "Desert Dome," which is great for going on adventures through one of the largest indoor deserts, and the largest glazed geodesic dome in the world. In the seas aquarium, you can see many types of penguins; as well as nautilus, lionfishes, leafy sea dragons, sea turtles, jellyfishes, among others.

If you like sports, especially baseball, Omaha hosts the College World Series, or CWS, an annual June baseball tournament that is the culmination of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I Baseball Championship tournament, which features 64 teams in the first round.
