This place was originally inhabited by Native Americans, but the first expeditions from Europe discovered this place in 1769- a very long time ago! Spanish missionaries under Father Junipero Serra founded Mission San Luis Rey de Francia on a former site of a Luiseño Indian village on the banks of the San Luis Rey River.
Now this place has a very close relationship with the military forces. Since the establishment of Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton in 1942, Oceanside has been home to U.S. armed forces personnel. This place was known for the ammunition manufacturing facility that supplied the Army during wartime, more specifically during World War II.
If you are planning a visit to Oceanside, there are some activities that you might want to point out on your list.
You can go for a relaxing stroll on the Oceanside Pier, which is a very iconic spot in this city! The original pier was destroyed by storms in the winter of 1890 and was rebuilt in 1893 by Melchoir Pieper at what is now Pier View Way. If you enjoy fishing you will find this place to be your perfect match, this is also a great spot to enjoy the sight, take some marvelous pictures and enjoy a nice meal. On top of the pier, there is a 50's style diner. Surfing is also very popular on both the north and south sides of the pier.
You can also enjoy a ride in the famous COASTER. The COASTER commuter train provides breathtaking coastal scenery as it runs north and south through San Diego County. It will only take you about an hour to travel the entire COASTER route.
For a little bit of history and heritage, you can visit the Mission San Luis Rey, that was founded in 1798 by Padre Fermin Francisco de Lasuen. The history of the San Luis Rey area reflects five periods of occupation: Luiseno Indian, Spanish Mission, Mexican Secularization, American Military, and Twentieth Century Restoration. Because of its large size, the mission has been nicknamed "King of the Missions."
The California Welcome Center in Oceanside receives more than 80,000 visitors each year and has a fantastic group of volunteers that are friendly and eager to provide helpful information and tips to you and your group when exploring Oceanside and San Diego County. This is a mandatory first stop if you truly want to live the full Oceanside experience. It's always nice to meet nice locals.
If you like to surf or you are just attracted to the sport, you can visit the Surf Museum, a place that has a great Californian vibe. With a permanent collection that chronicles the history of surfboards and wave-riding, the museum also offers many revolving exhibits each year.
